WHEN IN BERLIN..

dinsdag 1 april 2014

Together with my classmates I visited Berlin last week!
Thinking of Berlin things like the Wall, Brandenburger Tor and Checkpoint Charlie automatically pop up in our minds, but Berlin is so much more than that! It's a really cool vibrant city full of creative ideas and things to do. I would like to give you a couple of alternative tips to go see while you're there.
Some of these places we found spontaneously but it's always a good idea to check what you want to see before you go. Have fun!

The proof that I wasn't a total culture barbarian ;)

The Wall! East side gallery.
When in Berlin, one have to see the wall. Its a great part of German and European history. Seeing the wall and how high it is I can only imagine how the people of Berlin must have felt during that 28 years of seperation. Today it's owned by great artists who use art as a weapon to make a statement.

Art is the weapon!

Hamburger Bahnhof museum
In the former railwaystation built in 1846 lies the biggest modern art museum of Berlin.
After lengthy reconstruction by architect Josef Paul Kleihues, the Hamburger Bahnhof reopened on 2 November 1996 as a museum of contemporary art, the "Museum für Gegenwart".
See Andy Warhols large art pieces, contemapary and modern art.

Jewish museum
Go to this museum for it's architectural beauty and the very sad yet impressive stories of the Jews.
Get swept away when walking down the halls reading their stories and seeing photos.
Here you can learn everything you didn't know about Jewish people and their history.
To see the sad stories of all that passed during the WO2 made me very aware of the fact that we are very lucky to be born in the 21st century. Bring tissues! ;)

Neem zakdoekjes mee ;)

Goosebumps guaranteed!

Over to my alternative tips for Berlin!
JIMMY NELSON - BEFORE THEY PASS AWAY
I was very lucky to be able to see a exhibition of one of my favorite photographers of the moment: Jimmy Nelson. His photo's of colorful tribes are also published as a book; Before they pass away.
"The purity of humanity exists. It is there in the mountains, the ice fields, the jungle, along the rivers and in the valleys. Jimmy Nelson found the last tribesmen and observed them.  I wanted to witness their time-honoured traditions, join in their rituals and discover how the rest of the world is threatening to change their way of life forever. Most importantly, I wanted to create an ambitious aesthetic photographic document that would stand the test of time."  www.beforethey.com

FRECKLES
Because I have always been interested in vegan food I took a leap and had lunch at this vegan place called Freckles. Freckles is owned by two lovely ladies with a passion for vegan food. They cook and bake everything themselves, from a variety of panini and soup to all sorts of pastries. They even have vegan tiramisu! It's safe to say it was one of the best meals I've ever had.

This shop and museum has a great collection of tea and all its accessories like kettles and cups.
Browse through their great collection of loose tea leaves on display simply by pulling the drawers.
Don't hesitate to buy some lovely cards or the cute canvas bag!!

You can even learn a few things about the tea you drink!

STREETFOOD THURSDAY
Walking the (sometimes not so charming) streets of Kreuzberg I would never thought to find this hidden gem in the middle of the quiet Eisenbahnstrasse. There's a street food market every thursday night in "Markthalle Neun"It's a true feast! Whether you want to eat pizza, noodles, African, only came for a cup of tea, vegan or meat, or just want to take a picture in the photo booth...it's all there! In general the food in Berlin is really good and not expensive, and a food market like this is the perfect opportunity to taste different kinds of food. Most of the food stalls have their own restaurant somewhere in the city.
*
